The deep red and purple colour of berries are rich in health boosting antioxidants, so important for supporting immune function.
Berries are usually very popular with children and can be used to create a wealth of delicious recipes. They also have a lower GI than most other fruits which means that the release of sugar into the bloodstream is more steady leading to a more sustained energy release and avoiding the horrid post-sugar dip.
We love them in puddings, smoothies or simply sprinkled on our morning porridge.
Fresh berries are wonderful however don’t forget about frozen which are just as good and often much cheaper. When defrosted, they usually break down differently with more of a water content but are generally just as good to use in baking and are, of course, perfect for smoothies.
